World Economy Evolution: 200 years perspective

I found this fantastic video explaining how the economy has evolved during the last 200 years.

In this spectacular video Hans RoslingĀ  tells the story of the world in 200 countries over 200 years using 120,000 numbers – in just four minutes. Plotting life expectancy against income for every country since 1810, Hans shows how the world we live in is radically different from the world most of us imagine.

Obvioulsy it’s a not a scientific information for economists, but it’s really well done and give you a simple vision about the world evolution.

I expect you will enjoy it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbkSRLYSojo

The visualisation tool is actually from Google: http://www.google.com/publicdata/home

and the statistical data behind comes from public databases of official statistics around the world.

Those animations are great but only to start digging into the data. One problem of data series 200 years long is that old data are not very reliable. Statistical data today has much better quality than 10 years ago, imagine how it is comparing with data from 100 or 200 years ago.

Still it is very useful for many people and purposes.
